THE 5-MINUTE LESSON STARTER PLAYBOOK

10 Ready-to-Use Lesson
Openers for Any Subject

Rotate across the week to keep students engaged from the first second.

The first 5 minutes prime everything that follows. Use this sheet to plan your lesson openers for the week — pick 2–3 types and rotate them so students stay slightly off-balance in the best possible way.

01
Question on the Board
WHAT
Write one question before students arrive. They sit down and start writing immediately.
SAY THIS
"Write your answer in full sentences. You have three minutes."
PRO TIP
No obviously right answer — opinion, prediction, or open-ended recall all work.
02
The Deliberate Mistake
WHAT
Write something factually wrong on the board. Say it confidently. Ask them to find the error.
SAY THIS
"Something on this board is incorrect. You have 90 seconds to find it."
PRO TIP
Works for every subject — wrong formula, wrong date, wrong word, wrong diagram.
03
Prediction Challenge
WHAT
Show one image, word, or clue. Ask what today's lesson is going to be about.
SAY THIS
"Look at this image. Write down three things you think we're covering today and why."
PRO TIP
Never reveal immediately — let the prediction sit until the topic is confirmed mid-lesson.
04
60-Second Physical Reset
WHAT
One minute of movement. Rock-paper-scissors tournament, stretch, clap sequence, anything.
SAY THIS
"Stand up. For sixty seconds we're going to do something physical. Go."
PRO TIP
Use after lunch or doubles especially. The reset cost is 60 seconds; the gain is 40 minutes.
05
Rapid Recall Race
WHAT
Two minutes to write everything they remember from last lesson. No notes.
SAY THIS
"No books, no phones. Write everything you remember from Tuesday. Two minutes. Go."
PRO TIP
Compare with a partner after — anything neither remembered gets revisited.
06
Estimation Station
WHAT
Write a number on the board without context. Ask what it's connected to.
SAY THIS
"I'm going to write a number. Your job: figure out what it measures or counts."
PRO TIP
Connect the number to today's topic — reveal after 3–4 guesses.
07
Connection Challenge
WHAT
Give them two apparently unrelated things. Ask how they're connected.
SAY THIS
"How is [X] connected to [Y]? You have two minutes. Wrong answers are fine."
PRO TIP
Use across subjects: "How is photosynthesis connected to Instagram?"
08
30-Second Debate
WHAT
One low-stakes topic, two sides. Students argue the side they DON'T agree with.
SAY THIS
"Argue this side — even if you disagree. You have 30 seconds. Make it convincing."
PRO TIP
Pairs work best. Whole-class debates take too long for a starter.
09
Class Record Attempt
WHAT
A timed challenge with a score. Write the record on the board and try to beat it.
SAY THIS
"The class record is [X] seconds. We're going to try to beat it right now."
PRO TIP
Date the record. Classes take ownership of records that have their name on them.
10
Student-Led Opener
WHAT
Assign a student to plan and run the lesson opener for the class.
SAY THIS
"By Thursday, your job is to have a starter ready before I arrive. Pick anything from this sheet."
PRO TIP
Rotate through the class. Frame it as a genuine responsibility, not a task.
WEEKLY ROTATION PLANNER
